One of the primary indicators of overall happiness is your social support network and relationships. In fact there seems to be a bit of a reciprocal relationship since happier people function better socially.

Close relationships offer us a social support network which can both help to motivate us during the good times and assist us during the not so good times. In fact, research has shown that social support encourages positive emotions which cushion against stress.

Good friends help you challenge negative belief patterns and affirm our strengths. John Yaeger, who holds a doctorate in education says, "we all need positive social relationships because they tell us what we need to hear when we need to hear it. As such, sometimes they are our cheerleaders, other times our truth-tellers and always our possibility-generators."

So in terms of boosting overall levels of happiness it would seem that fostering good relationships is crucial. On Tuesday October 7th from 9-10 pm EST during Happy Hour (http://www.melissawest.com/index-15.html), we will be learning and practicing a technique to enhance well-being in relationships. Active constructive responding is a way to nurture your relationships and make them even stronger.
