Ayurveda, yoga's natural system of medicine, states that the health of the digestive system is the single most important long-term determinant of health and well-being. When the digestive system is not functioning efficiently toxins accumulate and seep out into the body rather than being eliminated. Toxins in the stomach create phlegm and move up into the lungs and lymphatic system. Toxins in the small intestine create acid and move up into the liver and blood. Toxins in the large intestine create gas and move up into the bones and the nerve tissue.

Yoga can balance the digestive fires - called agni in yoga. If agni is depleted or low then the digestive system becomes weak - you experience bloating, gas, constipation. If agni is excessive then there is too much heat in the GI system creating diarrhea, heart burn, acid reflux.

Poor digestion is a biproduct of holding on physically or emotionally. Not only is there physical constipation, but also mental constipation. Any type of constipation or holding is related to large intestine whether personal relationship, possession, thought or idea. By using postures to stimulate the large intestine you not only improve elimination of waste from the colon, but you are also able to release mental constipation.

The yogis believe that when waste is not moved through the intestinal system that it turns into mucous and moves up into the chest and the head creating illness. By improving the process of elimination you will also be boosting your immune system.

It is impossible for digestion to take place when the body is in fight or flight mode. Yoga works by calming the entire nervous system and as a result, digestion is improved.
