Sometimes I wonder how many people resort to surgeries as a solution for their back and knee problems when yoga offers so many great rehabilitative postures for these problems.
Problems in the low back and knees start in the feet. The problem is that we wear supportive footwear all day long that create muscular imbalance in our feet. The result is loss of proper muscle tone to support our knees and back. If your feet and arches especially are collapsed it will reflect up through the body as distortion and misaligment.
Here's what happens. If the arch has dropped, this causes weakness in the inner thighs and leaves the low back vulnerable to compression.
Check out your footwear. If their is excessive wear on the inside our outside of the heal (which there probably is) then you have muscular imbalance in your feet. The result is strain on the inside or outside of the knee and yes, knee problems.
Walking around with muscular imbalances in our feet is like driving a car with flat tires - not very fuel efficient. Do you want more energy? Start with your feet.
Yoga has so many great ways to create better muscular balance in the foot. Think about it, one of the first things you do in yoga is take your socks and shoes off to free up those feet.
The feet are the roots of the body. By spreading and deepening your connection with the earth you are able to grow towards the light.
