Recently, I have been asking my coaching clients how they get into flow. Most of us haven’t considered it, let alone able to recognize flow when it arrives. Csikszentmihalyi defines flow as being totally absorbed in an activity with an energetic focus. It is about being in process and enjoying the journey. It is total awareness in the moment or being in the “now” as Eckhart Tolle would say.

Connecting to the elements of nature can inspire us to get into flow. Water constantly changes shape and flows to fill its container. Think of the tides of an ocean. Pouring water into a glass. The gentle flow of a river downstream. The gushing of Niagara falls. Water flows. Flowing water gets things moving in your life. When you need to get things moving, connect with flowing water.

Let’s consider some ways you can connect to the water element and encourage flow in your life. If you live in a location where it is warm enough to go swimming right now, swimming can immerse you in the energy of water. Even if you live in a cold and wintery climate, like I do, find flow by skating over frozen water. Getting active and getting your body moving really helps to promote flow.

Want more ideas beyond exercise? Try taking a nice long warm hot shower or bath. Adding Epsom salts to your bath gives the added bonus of making it a detoxifying experience. Even increasing your water intake during the day will help to promote the healthy flow of fluids in your body.
This week I have created a short meditation to help you get into flow.

Waterfall Relaxation Meditation

You can do this meditation either seated or lying down in savasana.
Imagine a beautiful waterfall of white light is flowing down on you. Feel the crown of your head opening while the white waterfall of light enters into the body cleansing and calming the inside of the body – the spine, the organs, the bones, the muscles, the blood, the cells. Imagine if flowing over your face, relaxing all the muscles of the face, softening your eyes, relaxing your jaw, allowing every particle of hair on your head to relax. Feel the water flowing over your neck and shoulders, releasing muscular tension and holding. Feel the water flowing down over your arms softening your wrists and relaxing each and every finger. Imagine the water flowing down your back, its smooth ripples softening every muscle, letting go of any tension. Sense the waterfall of white light flowing over your chest, softening your heart and providing a gentle release for the shoulders. Feel the water flow over your stomach releasing any holding. The water cleanses and purifies your digestive system. Feel the water run down into your legs and feet softening, letting go and relaxing. Sense the luminous waterfall of divine white light flowing over your entire body creating deep peace and relaxation.
