This past week, I have been preparing for my upcoming radio interview with Bernie Clark (http://www.yinyoga.com/yin_teacher_directory.php#bernie_clark). In his book, YinSights (http://www.yinyoga.com/YinSights.php), he offers some of the best and most engaging descriptions of connective tissue I have ever come across.

Ever wonder why you might become more stiff and are more prone to illness as you age? Turns out, connective tissues and synovial fluid may have some of the answers.

When connective tissue is healthy, it is made up of nice, straight lines. As the body ages, the straight fibers of the connective tissue become tangled and bent. Tangled and bent fibers in connective tissues do two things: 1) shorten the space between the muscle and bone decreasing range of motion and 2) cause toxic build-up in the tissue.

When you practice yoga (http://www.melissawest.com/index-12.html)or go for massage (http://www.melissawest.com/index-34.html), you can loosen the bonds that trap the toxic particles in the tissue and allow them to be swept into the blood stream or lymphatic system to be removed from the body. Additionally, practicing yoga (http://www.melissawest.com/index-12.html)and getting regular massage (http://www.melissawest.com/index-34.html), help to lengthen out the tangled fibers and create more range of motion in the joints where the muscles and bones connect.

Additionally, as we age the body’s ability to produce synovial fluid to lubricate the joints decreases. That means that you become stiffer, and experience less elasticity in the body. Additionally when the joints are well lubricated with synovial fluid the cells and nutrients can move about freely. As fluid decreases in the body, toxins and waste become trapped in the connective tissue and harmful bacteria is able to migrate more easily.

Thai massage (http://www.melissawest.com/index-34.html) in particular help to keep the joints hydrated, open and strong. When you come for a thai massage (http://www.melissawest.com/index-34.html), the practitioner takes your joints, including your hip and shoulder joints through full range of motion. By taking the joints through a full range of motion the thai massage (http://www.melissawest.com/index-34.html) practitioner increases the synovial fluid in the joints, decreases stiffness, and reduces toxicity.

Drawing on Brenie Clark’s amazing resource (http://www.yinyoga.com/), dragon (http://www.yinyoga.com/ys2_2.0_asanas_dragons.php)can be a fantastic yoga pose to lengthen out the fibers of the connective tissue, create space, and increase synovial fluid in the hip joint. Reclined twists (http://www.yinyoga.com/ys2_2.0_asanas_recliningtwists.php) are powerful for the shoulder joint. If you are looking for a full practice dedicated to the hip joint or the shoulder joint, I would recommend my yoga DVDs (http://www.melissawest.com/index-16.html)“Happy Hips” and “Yoga for the Upper Back Neck and Shoulders” to target the hip and shoulder joints specifically.

Be sure to listen to Bernie Clark.on Returning to the Body Mind on Wednesday June 10th from 8-9 am PST, that’s 11 a.m. -12 noon EST.
