Kelly grew up in Boulder, Colorado where he encountered a series of teachers and friends who helped launch him on the path of self-discovery at age fourteen. John Brill has been making photographic records of his everyday existence since 1959. Self-taught in art, Brill’s shift to photography followed initial studies within the field of physiological psychology. In the early seventies, the artist drove a beer truck in the northeast corner of New Jersey absorbing the raw visual beauty of a vast industrial wasteland. Working with an extensive pool of unpaid assistants and models, Brill organized shoots like performances – traffic jams, crowds, things set on fire, various states of undress, beer in unlimited supply, and the attention of the local police.

Thereafter, he moved to New York to apprentice with the visionary architect Friedrich Kiesler. He was also hired for the design team of the World Trade Center, but was soon after fired by the chief architect, Minoru Yamasaki, for his unconventional ideas. He had apparently always been quite an 'unconventional' person. By Laffoley's account, he spoke his first word ("Constantinople") at the age of six months, and then lapsed into 4 years of silence, having been diagnosed with slight Autism. Laffoley has written that, in his senior year at Brown, he was given eight electric-shock treatments.
