Laurie Marshall is an artist, author, educator, and a global visionary - with a radically positive vision to transform not only education, but our economy, through creative, reality-based, project-centered curriculum and initiatives. In this ConsciousSHIFT interview, Laurie shares with Julie Ann her vision for 21st -Century education, where K-12 curriculum centers on the challenges faced by the community - partnering with experts across diverse disciplines, starting businesses that meet the pressing needs of our world, unleashing the fresh vision of young people on the problems of the day.
In 1999, Laurie had a life changing experience, when 8-year-old Meredith Miller of rural Virginia said, "What if the whole world made a painting together?" For Laurie, the vision of everyone on the planet creating something together was such a contrast to the warfare and squabbling that plagues so much of human activity. This vision sparked in Laurie the creation of "The Singing Tree" Project - drawn from a story in Kate Seredy’s book "The Singing Tree": During World War I, soldiers spent all night crawling on their to avoid the enemy. When the sun broke through the darkness of the night, the soldiers came across one tree that had survived. Hundreds of birds who aren’t normally together were in the tree - singing a song that had never been heard before.
Laurie invited the world to make a forest of colorful, co-created "Singing Tree" murals, expressing the idea that the Earth is "The Singing Tree" of the galaxies, and that we, as humans, may chose to destroy each other and our planet - or we may choose to create something beautiful that has never been seen before. The murals - visual expressions of democracy - are creative spaces where every participant can contribute his or her vision of solving a challenge, leading to concrete, positive actions. There are now 18 murals made by over 9000 people from 21 countries.
For 30 years, Laurie has guided young people, their families and their schools to beat the odds in rural, urban and suburban settings – unleashing self-confidence, unending creativity, a love of learning and a collaborative spirit. In her book Beating the Odds Now, Laurie shares 10 simple and powerful steps to guide educators and fellow visionaries worldwide to realize this vision. Laurie also founded the non-profit Unity Through Creativity, to bring the arts to beat the odds, by igniting imagination and connection to address community challenges and spark innovative actions.

Dr. Bruce Lipton is an internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit, long regarded as one of the leading voices of the new biology, through his breakthrough work, The Biology of Belief, in which he examining the principles of quantum physics and discovered how they were integrated into the cell’s information processing systems, such that the cell membrane, the outer layer of the cell, was an organic homologue of a computer chip, the cell’s equivalent of a brain.
